Champion Gothic

Jonathan Hoefler designed Champion Gothic in 1991 for Sports Illustrated, where it first appeared under the working title S.I. Gothic. It is a collection of six sans serifs related by width instead of weight, inspired by the American wood types that nineteenth-century poster printers used, and its members take their names from boxing weight classes. Four years later Sports Illustrated asked for an expanded version, and the result was Knockout, which is why the two are so often compared. These free typefaces work the same compact, wood-type gothic register without the Hoefler & Co. license fee.
