A free font archive that earns its picks

We find the best free alternatives to the typefaces designers reach for by comparing each one against the free libraries and surfacing the matches that hold up.

Why this project exists

Most "free font alternatives" lists are a sea of scraped names with no context. Free Font Now is the opposite: every recommendation comes with a one-line rationale, sourced from the people who use the fonts every day — type designers, foundry editors, and the long lineage of typography writers who've been at this longer than we have.

How we work

We start from a popular paid typeface, compare it to what's available in the free libraries, and pick the matches that genuinely hold up — by metrics, by history, or by working use. Editorial independence is the rule: recommendations on this site are not paid placements. If a font ever lands here because someone bought its way in, we'll say so on the page.

What's next

We're growing the catalogue one popular font at a time, then expanding to typefaces in active use today. If a font you swear by is missing, write to us and we'll add it on the next pass.
