League Gothic
A tightly condensed gothic display sans — the League’s open revival of ATF’s Alternate Gothic.
About League Gothic
League Gothic is a condensed gothic sans from The League of Moveable Type, an open-source reworking of American Type Founders' Alternate Gothic No. 1 (Morris Fuller Benton, 1903). Tall, narrow capitals and tight spacing pack a lot of word into a little width, with the plain, no-nonsense construction of early-twentieth-century newspaper and advertising type.
That density is the whole point: League Gothic is a headline and label face, built to set big at small measures — mastheads, posters, tickets, tables of contents — where a wider sans would run out of room. It was one of the first genuinely useful libre display faces, and it still does the job cleanly under the Open Font License, which is why we self-host it here.
