Best free alternatives to
Elegy
ITC released Elegy in 2010, designed by Jim Wasco of Monotype Imaging. Its source is the flowing script Ed Benguiat hand-lettered for the International Typeface Corporation logo in the early 1970s, lettering that had never existed as a working font. With Benguiat's blessing, Wasco took the Spencerian-style original apart and rebuilt it over roughly two years with updated spacing, stylistic changes and modern OpenType features, so the single style keeps some of the spontaneity of the logotype. These free typefaces work the same formal pointed-pen register without the license fee.
