About Playfair Display

Playfair Display is Claus Eggers Sørensen's 2011 high-contrast serif, drawn from the late-18th-century pivot between old-style and neoclassical letterforms. Thin hairlines meet bold stems, but transitional roots keep the joins bracketed and the whole thing softer than a true Didone, with slightly heavier hairlines and gentle bracketing added deliberately for screen rendering. Broad weight coverage and heavy use have made it dependable across browsers.

It is the default free Bodoni alternative for web work, warmer than the original, and it covers Didot wherever luxury is wanted with the severity dialed down. For fashion and editorial headlines it supplies the thin-hairline, bold-stem drama Canela trades on, and it is close enough to The Seasons to be interchangeable in most branding layouts. Baskerville sits at the same design moment; pair Playfair with Libre Baskerville for headline and body.

Display + body that work together

Quiet type that does the work
Body type does the heavy lifting. Get it right and the reader never thinks about it; get it wrong and they feel it before they can name what is off.

A grammar of empty space
Crisp, even strokes give the display its punch. Quiet serifs underneath stay readable across thousands of words — used together by editors at the kind of paper that still prints corrections.
