Best free alternatives to
Bauer Bodoni
The Bauer Type Foundry released Bauer Bodoni in 1926, drawn by its art director Heinrich Jost with punches hand-cut by Louis Hoell. It was made to compete with ATF Bodoni, which Morris Fuller Benton had softened for legibility, and it went the other way: hairlines as thin as metal allowed, vertical stress, flat unbracketed serifs and proportions close to Giambattista Bodoni's own cuttings. Typographers still treat it as the reference Bodoni. After Bauer closed in 1972 the design passed to Neufville, and today it sells as a licensed digital family. These free typefaces work the same high-contrast modern register without the license fee.
