About GFS Didot

GFS Didot is the Greek Font Society's scholarly revival of the Didot types, and the only literal free Didot available — vertical stress and hairline serifs intact rather than approximated. Drawn primarily for Greek, it ships with a matching Latin alphabet built to the same construction, so the modern-face qualities that define the style survive the crossing: a rigid vertical axis, abrupt thick-to-hairline transitions, serifs reduced to fine horizontal strokes.

When a project genuinely needs Didot rather than something Didot-adjacent — fashion mastheads, luxury editorial, high-contrast titling — this is the default free answer. The constraint is range: regular, italic, and bold, with no display cuts tuned for very large settings. Treat it as a faithful text-and-headline Didot, set the hairlines large enough to hold, and do not ask it to carry a full display system.

Pairings

Display + body that work together

A grammar of empty space
Body type does the heavy lifting. Get it right and the reader never thinks about it; get it wrong and they feel it before they can name what is off.

Letters that hold their nerve
A pairing is a relationship: one voice speaks first, the other answers, and the contrast between them sets the tone for the whole page.
