About Geist

Geist is Vercel's open-source grotesque, released in 2023 and drawn for developer-facing product interfaces and documentation. Its construction is squarer than the Swiss faces behind it, with sharper terminals, precise low-contrast strokes, and a full variable weight range. It ships alongside a matching monospace, so the pair covers UI, code, and marketing type from a single system.

That makes it the obvious free pick when a project wants the modern-Helvetica register without a license. Geist sits in the same conversation as Helvetica and Aktiv Grotesk — sharper and more tech-forward than either, where Aktiv stays brand-neutral — and covers much of what Söhne is hired for in product design. The screen-first precision lands close to OpenAI Sans's AI-era register, and the sans-plus-mono structure mirrors how the JetBrains type system is put together.

Letters that hold their nerve
Body type does the heavy lifting. Get it right and the reader never thinks about it; get it wrong and they feel it before they can name what is off.
