Best free alternatives to
Normandia
The Nebiolo foundry in Turin published Normandia in 1949, drawn by Alessandro Butti with Aldo Novarese over the years just after the Second World War. It is a fat face: the nineteenth-century idea of pushing a Bodoni-style Didone to its heaviest possible weight, with hairline serifs and crossbars set against slab-like thick strokes. Butti gave the model a slightly calligraphic twist, and Nebiolo issued it in roman, italic and outline. Metal Normandia was widely used for a few years before fading in the mid-1950s; Canada Type's 2021 digital revival restored all three cuts. These free typefaces work the same fat-face register without the license fee.
