The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog
Best free alternatives to
English Towne
Dieter Steffmann released English Towne as a freeware blackletter, and it has become one of the most downloaded Old English faces on dafont, where it is listed under Gothic and Medieval and marked free to use. It ships as a single Regular weight with a little over two hundred glyphs, enough for Latin text with the usual accents. The design sits squarely in the textura tradition of English town documents, inn signs and newspaper nameplates: dense vertical strokes, diamond-footed stems and heavily ornamented capitals. It is not on Google Fonts, but several free blackletter and gothic typefaces cover the same register and can be loaded straight from a CDN.
