About Bitter

Bitter is a contemporary slab serif by Sol Matas, released on Google Fonts in 2011 and built for comfortable long-form reading on screens. Its Egyptian skeleton is softened rather than mechanical — low contrast, sturdy color, a variable weight axis and true italics — and the family is deep enough to carry headline and body duties from a single file.

That combination makes it the closest free match in spirit to the Guardian families, covering both Headline and Text roles. It also stands in for Archer, though it is workmanlike where Archer is charming — a dependable body-text substitute rather than a personality match. Against Recoleta and Quincy CF it reads more neutral, trading some warmth for legibility, which is the right bargain in editorial systems and tech branding that need one serif to handle everything.

Pages that earn the read
A pairing is a relationship: one voice speaks first, the other answers, and the contrast between them sets the tone for the whole page.

Quiet type that does the work
The display sets the register; the body follows through. When both halves of a pair pull in the same direction, the design disappears and the words come forward.
