Best free alternatives to
Cambria
Microsoft commissioned Cambria from Jelle Bosma in 2004 as part of the ClearType font collection, the same batch that gave Office its sans default, Calibri. It was designed to do what Times New Roman does, a workhorse serif for long documents, but with even proportions, open spacing, low horizontal contrast and short, stubby serifs that hold together on low-resolution screens. Bosma has described it as a transitional slab-serif hybrid, and its Cyrillic, Greek and Cambria Math companion were built out with Tiro Typeworks. It ships only with Windows and Office, so it is absent from Google Fonts and from most web stacks. These free serifs work the same sturdy, screen-first register without the Microsoft license.

Common questions about Cambria alternatives
- Is Cambria free?
- No — Cambria is a commercial typeface from Microsoft. Commercial: bundled with Windows and Microsoft Office only, with other uses licensed through Tiro Typeworks or Monotype. The closest free alternative is Merriweather, available on Google Fonts.
- What font is similar to Cambria?
- Merriweather is the closest free match. Designed for on-screen reading with a tall x-height, sturdy low-contrast strokes and slightly condensed letterforms, the same brief Cambria answered for Microsoft. It is a little rounder and warmer, and its variable axes give you weights Cambria never had.
- Can I use Merriweather in commercial projects?
- Yes — Merriweather is published under a free license on Google Fonts and can be used in commercial work. Confirm the license text at the source before shipping.
