Alegreya
A free alternative to Apple Garamond.
About Alegreya
Alegreya was designed by Juan Pablo del Peral for Huerta Tipográfica, the collaborative Argentinian foundry, and first released in 2011 under the SIL Open Font License. It is a text serif that draws on calligraphic letterforms without reproducing them literally, translating the broad-nib gesture into a contemporary typographic language. That gives it a dynamic, varied rhythm on the page, which the foundry says is what makes long texts easier to read. The italic received the same design attention as the roman, and the family covers Latin, Greek and Cyrillic with small caps, ligatures, fractions and several figure styles. It earned a place among the ATypI Letter2 Fonts of the Decade in 2011.
Use it for books, long-form editorial and literary websites where a warm, slightly animated serif reads better than a neutral one. Alegreya SC supplies true small caps and Alegreya Sans a matching humanist sans, so the super family carries whole publications. It stands in for Minion Pro and other calligraphic book serifs, and for warmer old-style text faces.

Alegreya is also a free alternative to…
- Apple Garamond → Juan Pablo del Peral's calligraphic old-style serif with lively, slightly angled strokes and a comfortable x-height. It shares the humanist warmth of the Garamond tradition and sets economically in text, though its rhythm is more animated than ITC Garamond's smoothed, modernised forms.
- Feijoa → A calligraphic oldstyle drawn for long literary texts, with the same gently curved stems and warm rhythm that Feijoa gets from its no-straight-lines rule. Alegreya is a little more angular and energetic in the italic, and it comes in five weights with small caps rather than Feijoa's three text styles plus display.
