Apple Garamond

Apple adopted Apple Garamond as its corporate typeface with the first Macintosh in 1984. It began as ITC Garamond, Tony Stan's large-x-height interpretation of the sixteenth-century model, digitally squeezed in house, then properly redrawn by Bitstream at 80% of the original width with adjusted stroke weights and screen hinting. For roughly eighteen years it sat beside the Apple logo on product names, manuals, packaging and the Think different campaign, until Myriad took over from 2002. Apple never released it; Bitstream sold a close cousin as ITC Garamond Narrow. These free old-style serifs give you the same Garamond register without hunting for a font that was never licensed.

FAQ

Common questions about Apple Garamond alternatives

Is Apple Garamond free?
No — Apple Garamond is a commercial typeface from Bitstream / Apple. Proprietary to Apple and never released; the closest commercial relative, ITC Garamond Narrow, was sold by Bitstream until its ITC licence ended in 2001. The closest free alternative is EB Garamond, available on Google Fonts.
What font is similar to Apple Garamond?
EB Garamond is the closest free match. Georg Duffner's revival drawn directly from Claude Garamond's sixteenth-century punches, the same source ITC Garamond reinterpreted. It keeps the classical small x-height and long extenders that Tony Stan enlarged, so it reads calmer and more bookish, but it is the most faithful free Garamond for brand text.
Can I use EB Garamond in commercial projects?
Yes — EB Garamond is published under a free license on Google Fonts and can be used in commercial work. Confirm the license text at the source before shipping.
