About Spectral

Spectral is Production Type's screen-first text serif, commissioned by Google and released in 2017 with seven weights and true italics. It's a contemporary old-style face with warm humanist proportions and moderate contrast, tuned specifically for reading on screens.

Its screen tuning is the reason it substitutes so widely. Set against Minion Pro, it shares the understated editorial neutrality that lets a serif disappear into a page, with more contemporary detailing over the same document-and-report territory. It is crisper and more open than New York, which suits projects wanting the reading-serif role with a little more personality, and its humanist proportions cover the ground Sabon refined without being directly Garamond-derived. It is also cited more than any other free face as Canela's best all-round replacement: the lighter weights echo those delicate, gently flared strokes and, unlike most Canela alternatives, hold up in long text rather than only headlines.

Display + body that work together

Headlines, written under pressure
A pairing is a relationship: one voice speaks first, the other answers, and the contrast between them sets the tone for the whole page.

Letters that hold their nerve
Crisp, even strokes give the display its punch. Quiet serifs underneath stay readable across thousands of words — used together by editors at the kind of paper that still prints corrections.
