TT Lakes

TypeType released TT Lakes in 2016, designed by Ivan Gladkikh as the foundry's first superfamily: 54 styles across Lakes, Lakes Condensed and Lakes Compressed. The idea came from a railway sign in Priozersk, the former Finnish town of Käkisalmi, and the family was built to honour Finnish functionalist design. It is a plain, technological geometric sans with wide language support and a deep OpenType feature set. In 2020 TypeType redesigned and expanded it as TT Lakes Neue, now 91 styles plus a variable font. These free typefaces work the same geometric, multi-width register without the license fee.

FAQ

Common questions about TT Lakes alternatives

Is TT Lakes free?
No — TT Lakes is a commercial typeface from TypeType. TT Lakes and TT Lakes Neue are commercial fonts licensed through TypeType and resellers such as MyFonts and Fontspring; the foundry offers a free trial version for testing. The closest free alternative is Barlow, available on Google Fonts.
What font is similar to TT Lakes?
Barlow is the closest free match. A slightly rounded, low-contrast grotesk drawn from Californian signage and licence plates, shipped in regular, semi-condensed and condensed widths. The closest free match for TT Lakes' sign-painting origins and its three-width system, though Barlow is a touch softer and more American than the Finnish functionalist tone of the original.
Can I use Barlow in commercial projects?
Yes — Barlow is published under a free license on Google Fonts and can be used in commercial work. Confirm the license text at the source before shipping.
