Neue Haas Unica

Monotype released Neue Haas Unica in 2015, a digital revival by Toshi Omagari of the 1980 Unica designed by Team '77 (André Gürtler, Erich Gschwind and Christian Mengelt) for the Haas Type Foundry. The original was an attempt at the ultimate sans serif, a hybrid of Helvetica, Univers and Akzidenz Grotesk, and Gürtler described it as sharper than Helvetica, warmer than Univers, cleaner than Akzidenz. Legal disputes kept it out of digital circulation until Omagari rebuilt it with a full range of weights, matching italics, and Greek and Cyrillic. These free typefaces work the same neo-grotesque register without the license fee.
