Helvetica Neue

D. Stempel AG, then a Linotype subsidiary, released Neue Helvetica in 1983 as a systematic redrawing of the 1957 Helvetica. Decades of adapting the original for hot metal, photocomposition and digital output had left the family inconsistent, so the redesign gave every weight the same cap height, optically matched the lowercase, brought the condensed and extended styles into line and borrowed Univers's numbering scheme for its nine weights and four widths. Apple used it as the iOS system font from 2010 and in OS X Yosemite before San Francisco replaced it in 2015. These free typefaces work the same neutral neo-grotesque register without the license fee.

What font is similar to Helvetica Neue?
Inter is the closest free match. A neo-grotesque drawn for screens, with the same horizontal terminals and even rhythm as Helvetica Neue and a very similar overall texture in UI sizes.
