Elza

Blackletra released Elza in 2021, designed by Daniel Sabino in São Paulo and named after the Brazilian singer Elza Soares. Sabino set out to make, in his words, a plain, competent and versatile neo-grotesque, modeled on Helvetica and Univers but with no personal traits. Round letters carry small, almost invisible straight segments on their sides, which keeps the normal and condensed widths consistent and gives Elza a slightly more mechanized, squarish look than Helvetica. The family runs to 58 fonts across eight weights, three widths and two optical sizes, with obliques instead of true italics. These free typefaces work the same neutral grotesque register without the license fee.
