Roboto Flex
A free alternative to Aptos.
About Roboto Flex
Roboto Flex is Font Bureau's 2022 rebuild of Roboto as a very large variable family, with width, weight, optical-size, and grade axes rather than a fixed set of styles. The skeleton remains part grotesque, part humanist, but the axes turn it into a system: proportions, weight, and optical treatment can all be tuned to a specific role instead of chosen from a menu.
That adjustability is what makes it a free answer to Aptos — the width and optical-size axes let it be dialed toward Aptos's proportions, and its hybrid character mirrors Aptos's own. It's likewise the closest free match for SF Pro's engineering, if not its exact skeleton, being the other platform's system font rebuilt to the same ambitions. Roboto runs a shade rounder and more open than SF.

Roboto Flex is also a free alternative to…
- Aptos → A variable-font grotesque whose width, weight, and optical-size axes let you tune it toward Aptos's proportions. Its part-grotesque, part-humanist character mirrors Aptos's own hybrid nature.
- SF Pro → The other platform's system font, rebuilt as a huge variable family with optical size, width, and grade axes — the closest free match for SF's engineering, if not its exact skeleton. Roboto is a shade rounder and more open than SF.
