Basis Grotesque

Colophon Foundry released Basis Grotesque in 2015, designed by Anthony Sheret and Edd Harrington. It began three years earlier as a single Regular weight drawn for the redesign of the photography magazine Hotshoe, then grew into a family that runs from Light to Black with italics and monospaced cuts. Colophon names Akzidenz and various early Monotype grotesques as the starting points, honoured but set aside to make something slightly more behaved and shapely. That restraint is what puts it alongside Founders Grotesk in searches: both are polite grotesques with period roots. These free typefaces work the same grotesque register without the license fee.

A pairing is a relationship: one voice speaks first, the other answers, and the contrast between them sets the tone for the whole page.
