About Mr Dafoe

Mr Dafoe is a script typeface by Alejandro Paul, published by Sudtipos and released on Google Fonts in 2011 under the SIL Open Font License. It belongs to Sudtipos's Charles Bluemlein Script Collection. These digital revivals are based on alphabets that the New York letterer Charles Bluemlein assembled from real signatures between the 1930s and the Second World War, then marketed under invented names. The letters slope steeply and connect, the brush strokes swell from thin to thick, and it looks like a quick, confident signature in single-weight form.

It works best large: logos, packaging, posters, wedding and event stationery, apparel graphics and social headers, where its brushy swing can lead the layout. Don't use it for body text or small sizes. It is a free stand-in for casual brush scripts such as Beyond the Mountains. Sudtipos also sells an extended Mr Dafoe Pro with ligatures, alternates and stylistic sets.

Display + body that work together

Quiet type that does the work
The display sets the register; the body follows through. When both halves of a pair pull in the same direction, the design disappears and the words come forward.

The shape of a working week
A pairing is a relationship: one voice speaks first, the other answers, and the contrast between them sets the tone for the whole page.
