About Montserrat

Montserrat is Julieta Ulanovsky's geometric sans, drawn from the mid-century urban signage of the Buenos Aires neighborhood it takes its name from. It has a tall x-height, sturdy circular forms, generous counters, and wide proportions across nine weights with italics — geometric bones carrying a warmer, more urban flavor than strict modernist faces.

It is the most consistently cited free answer to Gotham and Proxima Nova, and by extension to Netflix Sans, which sits in Gotham's orbit. Its bold weights deliver the poster-like presence of Gilroy and Nexa, and the family depth is enough to substitute Verlag across a whole identity. A higher x-height and tighter construction than Avenir mean it wins at headline sizes and gives up softness in body text. Set it in caps with light letter-spacing for branding.

Display + body that work together

Quiet type that does the work
Body type does the heavy lifting. Get it right and the reader never thinks about it; get it wrong and they feel it before they can name what is off.

Headlines, written under pressure
Crisp, even strokes give the display its punch. Quiet serifs underneath stay readable across thousands of words — used together by editors at the kind of paper that still prints corrections.
