Officina Sans

ITC released Officina Sans in 1990, designed by Erik Spiekermann, who had drawn the first two weights in 1988 under the working name ITC Correspondence. He took the monospaced Letter Gothic and Courier as reference points and built a more elegant neo-humanist sans that would stay legible on the low-quality laser printers of the time. Its blunt edges, explicit pseudo-serifs and oblique terminals became a 1990s signature, and Ole Schäfer later extended the family to five weights with italics, plus a companion Serif. These free typefaces work the same sturdy, slightly technical humanist register without the license fee.

The display sets the register; the body follows through. When both halves of a pair pull in the same direction, the design disappears and the words come forward.
