About Fira Sans
Fira Sans is a humanist UI typeface Erik Spiekermann and Ralph du Carrois drew for Firefox OS, released free in 2013 and built explicitly on the skeleton of Spiekermann's own FF Meta. Its open apertures, angled terminals, and warm humanist rhythm are the genuine article, tuned to stay legible at small sizes and in dense settings across a large weight range.
That pedigree makes it the definitive free stand-in for Meta itself, and a warmer, more characterful alternative to system UI faces like Segoe UI and Tahoma. Where those aim for plain function, Fira brings the same legibility with more personality — effectively an open-source descendant of Meta from the same hand.

- FF Meta → The definitive choice — Spiekermann himself co-designed Fira for Firefox OS, explicitly building on FF Meta's skeleton, so the open apertures, humanist rhythm, and angled terminals are the genuine article. Effectively an open-source descendant of Meta from the same hand.
- Officina Sans → Erik Spiekermann's own open-source humanist sans, derived from FF Meta, so it carries the same designer's hand: open apertures, sturdy strokes and a slightly technical warmth. It lacks Officina's pseudo-serifs and blunt oblique terminals, but it is the closest free match in overall rhythm, with a wide range of weights and a condensed companion.

- Tahoma → Mozilla's Firefox OS face — a humanist sans tuned for legibility on small, low-resolution screens, the same brief Tahoma answered twenty years earlier.
- Whitney → Commissioned by Mozilla for Firefox OS; a humanist sans built for small screens and low resolutions, with condensed companions that echo Whitney's space-saving side.
- MD System → A humanist sans with 18 weights and italics, plus a separate Fira Sans Condensed, giving it the width coverage most free grotesques lack. Its construction is more openly humanist than MD System's grotesque skeleton, with livelier stroke endings and a lighter overall texture.
- Segoe UI Variable → Designed for Mozilla's Firefox OS screens, Fira Sans is a humanist interface face with the same practical, legibility-first brief as Segoe UI Variable. Its letterforms are warmer and more distinctive, with more visible stroke contrast, so it reads a touch friendlier than Segoe's neutral tone.
- JAF Bernini → An open, screen-tuned sans with a straightforward manner close to Bernino's text styles. It also ships a Condensed family for headlines. It has more weights than Bernini but no compressed width and no informal alternate sub-family.
