Cresci Exemplar Pro
California Type Foundry released Cresci Exemplar Pro in 2023, credited to Dave Lawrence and to Giovan Francesco Cresci, the Milanese writing master whose book Essemplare supplied the letterforms. It is a one-style family of capitals, numerals and symbols, drawn from high-resolution references to the printed originals and intended for titling at large sizes. Cresci's capitalis monumentalis served as models for later inscriptions on Italian statues and monuments, which puts this face in the same Roman inscriptional register as Trajan Pro, though from a Renaissance calligrapher's hand rather than a Roman column. These free typefaces work the same classical-capitals register without the license fee.

Display + body that work together
A grammar of empty space
A pairing is a relationship: one voice speaks first, the other answers, and the contrast between them sets the tone for the whole page.
Pages that earn the read
The display sets the register; the body follows through. When both halves of a pair pull in the same direction, the design disappears and the words come forward.

Common questions about Cresci Exemplar Pro alternatives
- Is Cresci Exemplar Pro free?
- No — Cresci Exemplar Pro is a commercial typeface from California Type Foundry. Commercial font sold through MyFonts, Creative Market and YouWorkForThem, with a regular desktop price listed at $47 and separate webfont, e-pub and app licenses. The closest free alternative is Cinzel, available on Google Fonts.
- What font is similar to Cresci Exemplar Pro?
- Cinzel is the closest free match. Natanael Gama's Cinzel draws directly on first-century Roman inscriptions, the same capitalis monumentalis tradition Cresci studied and refined. It is the closest free match in proportion and seriffing, but it carries three weights and a lowercase-free caps-only set, where Cresci Exemplar Pro offers a single style with a calligrapher's softer modelling.
- Can I use Cinzel in commercial projects?
- Yes — Cinzel is published under a free license on Google Fonts and can be used in commercial work. Confirm the license text at the source before shipping.
