About Source Code Pro
Source Code Pro is Adobe's open-source monospace, drawn by Paul D. Hunt in 2012 for coding and interface work and now one of the most widely deployed free fixed-width families. Its apertures are wider and its spacing more generous than the typewriter monospaces that preceded it, which keeps character shapes distinct where a code editor packs them tightly together.
Against Courier, the difference is clarity at small sizes. Courier's narrow, lightly drawn slab forms were built for typewriter output and go soft on screen; Source Code Pro renders sharply and stays legible in dense listings. It's the workhorse choice for code blocks, technical documentation, terminal output, and anywhere ambiguous characters need to be told apart at a glance, and it pairs cleanly with the rest of Adobe's Source family.
