Saira Condensed

Saira Condensed is Omnibus-Type's narrowed cut of Saira, distributed on Google Fonts as one member of a four-width family carrying nine weights each. The forms are a plainly drawn grotesque — squared-off curves, tall lowercase, generous weight range from hairline through black — and the widths are graded so that a design can step between them without changing skeletons.

That system is the reason to use it in place of Knockout. Knockout's appeal is its width-and-weight matrix, the ability to set a whole layout in one voice at many compressions; Saira is the free way to build the same kind of graded system, with matching proportions across every width. It suits editorial headline stacks, sports and event graphics, and any layout where headlines need to shift width from spread to spread while staying visibly related.
