About Roboto Slab
Roboto Slab is Christian Robertson's 2011 slab counterpart to Roboto, applying Material Design's logic to slab-serif construction. It's monoweight and architectural — even stroke thickness, squared-off serifs, no ornament — and it now ships with a variable weight axis. Neutrality is the governing idea, which is unusual in a category that tends toward personality.
That neutrality makes it the default free Clarendon substitute for body copy and UI, since it matches the even stroke weight Clarendon shows at text sizes. It's an equally direct stand-in for Rockwell, sharing the same monoweight build and architectural register, and it's the most heavily downloaded slab on Google Fonts. The caution is display work: Clarendon turns ornate as it scales up, while Roboto Slab stays flat.
