Roboto Condensed is Christian Robertson's narrowed cut of Roboto, released through Google Fonts in 2011 for headlines and labels that have to fit a tight measure. It keeps the parent family's neo-grotesque skeleton and even color, compressing the widths without thinning the strokes, so a line of caps or a stack of labels holds its weight at small sizes. Screen rendering is impeccable, which was always the point of the design.

The paid face it most often stands in for is Interstate. Roboto Condensed isn't signage-derived and doesn't carry that highway lineage, but it covers the most common real-world Interstate job — no-nonsense condensed grotesque headlines, wayfinding-style labels, dense table headings — with a workmanlike neutrality that suits interface work. Reach for it when a layout needs disciplined compression rather than the specific character of a signage typeface.
