About Red Hat Text

Red Hat Text is Red Hat's open-source corporate sans, drawn by MCKL and released in 2019 with a variable weight axis tuned specifically for body copy. The base construction is geometric, warmed by subtle humanist adjustments — the geometry loosened just enough that words hold together across a paragraph instead of reading as a row of circles and straight lines.

That is the practical argument for it as a Futura alternative. Futura's own geometry is unforgiving at length, and Red Hat Text keeps the voice while fixing the behavior: the same clean modernist tone, in a face that can actually carry long-form text. Use it where Futura is wanted below headline size — interfaces, documentation, editorial body copy. For the headlines themselves, Red Hat Display sits alongside it in the same family.

Display + body that work together

The shape of a working week
Two thousand years of letterforms boil down to a handful of decisions — width, weight, proportion. Pick a pair you trust, and let the rest take care of itself.

Pages that earn the read
The display sets the register; the body follows through. When both halves of a pair pull in the same direction, the design disappears and the words come forward.
