Petrona
A free alternative to Means.
About Petrona
Petrona is Ringo R. Seeber's organic upright serif, drawn with flowing strokes and a hand-drawn undercurrent, and offered on Google Fonts across a full variable range. The letterforms have a soft, slightly irregular quality: the modulation reads as drawn rather than constructed, and the serifs follow the stroke instead of cutting it off cleanly. That personality holds from light text settings up through heavy display.
Its humane, faintly offbeat character is what places it alongside Means. Petrona is less bulbous than the Cooper-style faces usually put forward against Means, but it shares the same editorial temperament — warm, opinionated, plainly not neutral. Reach for it where a piece wants a serif with a point of view: magazine layouts, long-form articles, and brand typography that should sound written rather than typeset.
