Montserrat Alternates

Montserrat Alternates is Julieta Ulanovsky's alternate-glyph cut of Montserrat, swapping the family's default forms for single-story and more strictly geometric shapes. The skeleton is the same wide, urban geometric sans, but the substitutions — most visible in the lowercase — push it toward a quirkier, more overtly modernist reading. The full weight range comes with it, so the alternates aren't confined to a display-only cut.

Those swaps are what make it the usual free answer to ITC Avant Garde Gothic. The geometric bones and single-story forms land in Avant Garde's territory, and the weight range covers everything from fine display lines to heavy setting. What it can't supply is Lubalin's interlocking ligatures, the tightly nested pairs that define Avant Garde at its most characteristic. For logotypes and headlines that want the era's geometry without that particular trick, it's a straightforward stand-in.
