About Monsieur La Doulaise

Monsieur La Doulaise is Alejandro Paul's 2011 formal pen script, a slender, high-contrast hand built on ultra-fine hairlines. Elaborate curling capitals and dramatic swashes give it the look of old-world engraving, rendered with unusual precision for a free face.

Those hairlines set the terms of use: reserve it for large display sizes where the thin strokes hold. At that scale it reproduces Kuenstler Script's engraved steel-pen exactness and captures the delicate character of Edwardian Script closely. It is lighter in color than Vivaldi but every bit as ornamental, and against Zapfino it swaps chaos for old-world elegance while keeping the ornamental spirit intact. Distributed through Google Fonts, it is the right choice for invitations, certificates, and packaging lockups where refinement matters more than robustness — and the wrong one anywhere the type has to work small.

Pairings

Display + body that work together

A grammar of empty space
Crisp, even strokes give the display its punch. Quiet serifs underneath stay readable across thousands of words — used together by editors at the kind of paper that still prints corrections.

Quiet type that does the work
Body type does the heavy lifting. Get it right and the reader never thinks about it; get it wrong and they feel it before they can name what is off.
