A free alternative to Caslon.
About Libre Caslon Display
Libre Caslon Display is Pablo Impallari's 2014 display cut of the Libre Caslon family, drawn with the higher stroke contrast and finer detail that headline sizes allow. Where a text Caslon has to thicken its hairlines to survive small settings, this one lets them stay thin — sharper serifs, crisper bracketing, more pronounced modulation through the bowls. It keeps Caslon's familiar warmth but pitches it for large type.
It is the free route to Caslon at display size, and it's built to be used in pairs. Set headlines in Libre Caslon Display and body copy in Libre Caslon Text and the result is a complete display-plus-text family working in one idiom, from a single free source. Between them they cover most of what a licensed Caslon does in editorial layouts, book covers, and mastheads: refinement where it shows, a sturdier text cut underneath.

Libre Caslon Display is also a free alternative to…
- Caslon → The display companion to Libre Caslon Text — higher stroke contrast and refined details for headline use. Pair with Libre Caslon Text for a complete display + body family in the Caslon idiom.
- Domaine Display → A high-contrast display serif with crisp, bracketed serifs tuned for headline sizes. Its roots are Caslon rather than the French/British blend behind Domaine, but it hits the same sharp, editorial note.
