About Inter Tight
Inter Tight is a tailored variant of Inter, the open-source sans Rasmus Andersson began in 2017 and has developed ever since. Google Fonts added it on 22 July 2022 with a plain brief: tighter spacing, for display usage, in roman and italic. The drawing is unchanged Inter, a neo-grotesque with a tall x-height, open apertures and plain terminals. The sidebearings are reduced per weight, zero at Thin, more at Regular, a little less again at Black, so the family holds together as the weight axis moves from 100 to 900.
The point is headlines. Standard Inter is spaced for interface text and looks loose above forty pixels; Inter Tight closes that gap without a tracking rule. It originated so Google Workspace users could get tight headings where letterspacing cannot be adjusted, and the same logic applies to any CMS that limits CSS. It stands in cleanly for Netflix Sans, Helvetica Now Display, SF Pro Display and other brand grotesques tuned for large sizes, and it is free under the SIL Open Font License.
