About Chivo

Chivo is a neo-grotesque sans serif from Omnibus-Type, the collective type foundry based in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Héctor Gatti designed it with Igino Marini, and the first version shipped in November 2011 under the SIL Open Font License. It was the foundry's first grotesque family, and its name is Spanish for goat. The strokes are solid and evenly balanced, which gives the face a practical, slightly engineered feel without losing warmth. In 2022 the family was rebuilt as a variable font with a weight axis running from Thin to Black, matching italics, and an extended glyph set for more languages.

The regular weight was drawn for long reading, so Chivo holds up in body text and interface copy, while the Black weight was made for headlines, banners, and highlights. That range makes it a workable single-family system for editorial sites and product UI. Designers reach for it where they might otherwise license a compact, no-nonsense neo-grotesque such as Helvetica Neue, Akzidenz-Grotesk, or Univers, and it pairs naturally with its monospace sibling, Chivo Mono.

Display + body that work together

Quiet type that does the work
The display sets the register; the body follows through. When both halves of a pair pull in the same direction, the design disappears and the words come forward.

Headlines that read at a glance
Crisp, even strokes give the display its punch. Quiet serifs underneath stay readable across thousands of words — used together by editors at the kind of paper that still prints corrections.
