About Cardo
Cardo is a scholarly serif David Perry released in 2009 for classical-language and humanities typesetting, drawing on the same Renaissance lineage that produced Garamond. Its models sit in the Bembo tradition, and the character set goes where most text serifs do not — extensive Greek, Hebrew, and polytonic diacritics. Only three styles ship, so its natural range is body text rather than layered hierarchy.
As a free alternative it is narrow but excellent when the text suits it. It stands in for Garamond on the humanist side and for Minion Pro on the book page, covering exactly the scholarly work Minion is famous for, with polytonic support neither offers by default. Choose it for critical editions, dissertations, and academic publishing; for display hierarchies needing many weights, look further down the Google Fonts library.
