Alfa Slab One

Alfa Slab One is a heavy display serif by JM Solé, released on Google Fonts in 2011 and drawn out of the nineteenth-century fat-face tradition. Weight is the entire point: stems swell until the counters close to slivers, and the serifs stay hard and squared rather than softening into the stroke. It's a single-weight face built for size, meant to be set large where the contrast between black stems and compressed white space does the work.

It's the rare free face that matches Cooper Black's sheer blackness while keeping actual serifs — and it gets there through the same fat-face lineage Cooper himself riffed on. The register differs, though. Where Cooper is rounded ad lettering, buttery at every edge, Alfa Slab One is Victorian poster: harder, more angular, more period-specific. Reach for it when a headline needs Cooper's density but can carry a sharper voice.
