About Aleo
Aleo is a semi-rounded slab serif by Alessio Laiso, released in 2013 as a companion to Lato and drawn in five weights with italics. Its corners are gently rounded rather than sharply bracketed, which softens the slab silhouette without giving up structure, and it was built for screen use rather than nineteenth-century letterpress. The overall effect sits between a slab and a text serif.
Balancing structure against softness is what Archer does, and Aleo gets close on temperament while trading the geometric skeleton for a more neutral one. Against Clarendon it keeps the sturdy proportions but drops the hard bracketing, so the result reads contemporary instead of Victorian. The Lato pairing makes it an easy slab to slot into a system that already runs on a humanist sans, with enough range to cover headlines and captions out of a single family.
