Netflix Sans vs Inter Tight
A bespoke brand grotesque against a free Google Fonts staple. Netflix Sans was built in 2018 by Netflix's in-house team with Dalton Maag to replace Gotham and give the streamer an ownable voice, while Inter Tight is Rasmus Andersson's tighter-spaced cut of Inter, released in 2022 for display use. Both are clean, neutral sans-serifs tuned for screens, but one was made for a single company and the other for everyone.
Netflix Sans is a commercial font, so it is shown here in Montserrat, its closest free alternative. All free alternatives to Netflix Sans →
- Netflix Sans is proprietary: Netflix commissioned it partly to escape font licensing costs at global scale, and it is not sold or licensed to the public, so using it legitimately is not an option.
- Inter Tight ships under the SIL Open Font License as a variable font with a 100 to 900 weight axis plus italics, free for any commercial project.
- Netflix Sans pairs deliberately 'cinematic' uppercase proportions with a compact, efficient lowercase, and its arched cut on the lowercase t echoes the curve of the Netflix wordmark.
- Inter Tight keeps Inter's tall x-height and UI-bred letterforms but closes up the spacing, which makes it read as a headline face rather than a body-text workhorse.
- Netflix Sans comes in six static weights from Thin to Black, while Inter Tight covers the full range continuously in a single variable file.
Netflix Sans is only worth reaching for if you work on Netflix's own brand; its cinematic caps and compact lowercase were designed for that identity and nothing else.
