Tofino

Lost Type released Tofino in May 2016, designed by Alanna Munro. It started as eight display weights, and a 2.0 release with italics followed in March 2017. The later Tofino Pro grew to 74 styles across Condensed, Narrow, Regular and Wide widths. The design draws on Swiss neo-grotesque typography but takes its slightly squared, condensed shapes from the 1922 Grotesca Ideal. The foundry calls it Swiss style with more hang-loose attitude. It was built mainly for screens, and its text sizes are optically adjusted. These free typefaces cover the same squared, warm grotesque register without the commercial license fee.

Pages that earn the read
Crisp, even strokes give the display its punch. Quiet serifs underneath stay readable across thousands of words — used together by editors at the kind of paper that still prints corrections.

FAQ

Common questions about Tofino alternatives

Is Tofino free?
No — Tofino is a commercial typeface from Lost Type. Lost Type sells Tofino with a pay-what-you-want personal licence; commercial use needs a paid licence ($80 for Tofino, $160 for Tofino Pro). The closest free alternative is Archivo, available on Google Fonts.
What font is similar to Tofino?
Archivo is the closest free match. A grotesque with squarish curves and a full width axis from condensed to expanded, so it matches both Tofino's squared construction and its multi-width Pro family. Its tone is a little more technical and less relaxed than Tofino's West Coast warmth.
Can I use Archivo in commercial projects?
Yes — Archivo is published under a free license on Google Fonts and can be used in commercial work. Confirm the license text at the source before shipping.
