About Yellowtail

Yellowtail is a single-weight brush script designed by Brian J. Bonislawsky of Astigmatic and added to Google Fonts in 2011. Its strokes have the even, slightly flattened look of a flat brush. The letterforms take their cues from 1930s scripts such as Gillies Gothic and Kaufmann but keep the loose rhythm of hand-lettered signs. Because some letters connect and others don't, words stay open and readable even at small display sizes.

The font works best in short runs of text: logotypes, packaging, menus, posters, labels and headings with a retro or hand-painted feel. It looks especially at home on diner, surf, garage and vintage American signage themes. As a free option it can replace commercial brush scripts such as Actonia in casual, energetic lettering, and it pairs well with a plain grotesque or slab for body text.

Letters that hold their nerve
Body type does the heavy lifting. Get it right and the reader never thinks about it; get it wrong and they feel it before they can name what is off.

A grammar of empty space
A pairing is a relationship: one voice speaks first, the other answers, and the contrast between them sets the tone for the whole page.
