About Solway
Solway is a low-contrast slab serif from The Northern Block, distributed on Google Fonts, with softly rounded joints that give it a sturdy and notably likeable presence. The serifs are blunt and heavy, the contrast minimal, and the rounding where stems meet serifs keeps the heavier weights from turning brittle — the texture stays warm rather than industrial.
That chunky warmth is what it borrows from Means, particularly Means's heavier cuts, where the same combination of weight and softness does the work. Solway holds up well in short UI labels, buttons, section headings, and product titles, where the slab gives a line real substance without the formality of a text serif. It's less suited to long body copy, where the low contrast and heavy serifs make paragraphs feel dense.
