About Ribeye

Ribeye is a display typeface designed by Brian J. Bonislawsky for his foundry Astigmatic and published on Google Fonts in November 2011. It arrived with a companion, Ribeye Marrow, which renders the same letterforms as outlines. The design borrows from cartoon tattoo lettering: heavy strokes that swell and taper unevenly within each glyph, rounded terminals, and a bouncy rhythm that reads as hand-drawn rather than mechanical. It comes in a single regular weight and supports Latin-1, Latin-2, Turkish and Windows Baltic ranges.

Use it where a headline needs personality: food and drink branding, event posters, apparel, game titles and anything that wants a retro flash-art flavor. It is strictly a display face, so keep it to a few words at large sizes. Licensed under the SIL Open Font License, it is a free stand-in for paid tattoo-flash and cartoon lettering fonts, and it loads from Google Fonts without any license fee.

Pairings

Display + body that work together

Letters that hold their nerve
A pairing is a relationship: one voice speaks first, the other answers, and the contrast between them sets the tone for the whole page.

The shape of a working week
Two thousand years of letterforms boil down to a handful of decisions — width, weight, proportion. Pick a pair you trust, and let the rest take care of itself.
