About Playfair

Playfair is the full realisation of a project Claus Eggers Sørensen worked on from 2005 to 2024. Playfair Display, published in 2011 and updated in 2017, covered only headline sizes. The complete Playfair, added to Google Fonts in 2023, is a variable family with three axes: width from semi-condensed to semi-expanded, weight from Light to Black, and optical size from Agate to Needlepoint. At the small end strokes are nearly monoline, with horizontals slightly heavier than verticals. At the large end contrast is near-maximal and the thinnest strokes are a single unit wide. The design is transitional in spirit, with vertical stress, bracketed serifs and ball terminals.

That optical range makes it a rare free serif that can set a magazine from masthead to footnote in one file. Pair the Needlepoint end with editorial, fashion and luxury layouts where you might otherwise license a Didone, and the Agate end with dense body copy. It stands in for high-contrast commercial families such as Didot, Bodoni and Baskerville-style text faces, and is licensed under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

Pairings

Display + body that work together

Pages that earn the read
Body type does the heavy lifting. Get it right and the reader never thinks about it; get it wrong and they feel it before they can name what is off.
Editorial · Modern Playfair + Public Sans
A grammar of empty space
The display sets the register; the body follows through. When both halves of a pair pull in the same direction, the design disappears and the words come forward.
