About Le Murmure

Le Murmure is a high-contrast display sans by Jérémy Landes, released free through Velvetyne in 2020. It was drawn as a bespoke face for the French agency Murmure, and pairs a fairly ordinary lowercase with wildly elongated, flamboyant capitals whose thick-and-thin contrast is unusual for a sans serif.

That split personality is the whole idea: set small it behaves like a clean grotesque, but its capitals, ascenders, and ligatures unfurl at display sizes into something graphic and unmistakable. It is a headline and identity face rather than a text one, and under the Open Font License it has become one of Velvetyne's most widely used releases. Self-hosted here.

Pairings

Display + body that work together

The shape of a working week
A pairing is a relationship: one voice speaks first, the other answers, and the contrast between them sets the tone for the whole page.

Letters that hold their nerve
The display sets the register; the body follows through. When both halves of a pair pull in the same direction, the design disappears and the words come forward.
