About La Belle Aurore

La Belle Aurore is a handwriting typeface that Kimberly Geswein created in 2010. Her own description calls it a whimsical, romantic hand inspired by Casablanca. It comes in a single regular weight. The letters lean and loop like a script without being one: curls and tendrils trail off the strokes. The line weight changes throughout, so it looks like ink from a pen or marker rather than a drawn outline.

It works best for short, personal text: signatures, greeting cards, wedding stationery, invitations, menu headings and quotes over photography. Set it large enough for the thin strokes to stay readable, and keep it away from long text or small interface labels. It can replace paid scripts based on an artist's handwriting, such as P22's Cezanne Pro, which is based on Paul Cézanne's own hand. Choose it when the brief calls for a romantic handwritten note rather than formal calligraphy.

Pairings

Display + body that work together

A grammar of empty space
The display sets the register; the body follows through. When both halves of a pair pull in the same direction, the design disappears and the words come forward.

Pages that earn the read
Crisp, even strokes give the display its punch. Quiet serifs underneath stay readable across thousands of words — used together by editors at the kind of paper that still prints corrections.
