About Kalam

Kalam is a handwriting typeface for Devanagari and Latin, first published by the Indian Type Foundry in 2014. Lipi Raval designed the Devanagari, and she and Jonny Pinhorn developed the Latin together. The letterforms keep the slant and loose, knotted strokes of quick pen writing, yet the family was optimised for on-screen text. It comes in three weights (Light, Regular and Bold), and each has around 1,025 glyphs with extensive Devanagari conjunct support.

Kalam suits informal settings that still need to be readable at text sizes: annotations, notes in an interface, educational material, packaging, menus and friendly marketing copy. Because it covers both Latin and Devanagari, it is a rare choice for bilingual Hindi–English or Marathi–English work where both scripts should feel handwritten. It stands in for commercial handwriting faces such as Adobe's Graphite MM, giving that personal, written-by-hand tone at no cost.

Headlines that read at a glance
Two thousand years of letterforms boil down to a handful of decisions — width, weight, proportion. Pick a pair you trust, and let the rest take care of itself.

A grammar of empty space
The display sets the register; the body follows through. When both halves of a pair pull in the same direction, the design disappears and the words come forward.
