About General Sans

General Sans is a rationalist neo-grotesque drawn by Frode Helland and released free through Fontshare in 2021, with even geometric proportions and an orderly but lively temperament. The letterforms stay clean and open, geometric-leaning without tipping into fully circular construction, and restrained enough in their quirks to disappear into long settings while still reading as drawn rather than defaulted.

That balance of neutrality and warmth lands close to Apercu, which it replaces dependably across both body and brand work, a shade more even-tempered than the original. It covers Neue Montreal's territory too — branding and identity — running slightly warmer and rounder there. Fontshare permits commercial use, which is the practical argument: two of the most-licensed studio sans of the last decade, approximated closely, at no cost and with no license to track.

Pairings

Display + body that work together

Headlines, written under pressure
The display sets the register; the body follows through. When both halves of a pair pull in the same direction, the design disappears and the words come forward.
